Reflection
February 3, 2017
There is so much I can reflect on about this internship. I think my projects went great. We just did another one today and will be giving it to the lions tomorrow. It's based on the super bowl and we made big boxes based on the teams to see who will win the super bowl on Sunday (picture below). Something that could've been better is more planning. My first project was planned but it was kind of a back up plan. My other projects just happened. What stands out the most to me is how the projects turned out. Especially the ones we made today. They look great and I didn't really know what the products of all these would be when I first became an intern but I am really proud of the work we've done. This internship was an amazing experience and I've learned so much. Kind of sad it's coming to an end but the future holds a lot more!

Beyond The Internship
February 2, 2017
Beyond this internship I plan to continue helping out at LTB and volunteering. After working there for a month I've come to notice how much volunteers help, especially during the week. They also host a lot of events that are super fun and they could definitely use help with those. So I plan to be back in May for the their biggest event this year and hopefully over summer I can go up a few days a week. Plus I can always get more volunteer hours there for whatever I may need them for. I really like the people that work there and love talking to them and getting to know them. I think they really like us as intern too. This is something I'd really like continue and be a bigger part of.

College
February 1, 2017
I have met a lot of people here who've studied animals throughout college by majoring in zoology or marine life etc. I think it would be very interesting to study something like as either a major or a minor. I do plan on doing something involving animals whether it is a full time job or something that I do for fun. Not only do I have a passion and love for them but I think they are super interesting and I hope one day I can do something a little more hands on so whatever I can do to reach that goal, I will do.

Thankful
January 31, 2017
What I am most thankful for from this whole experience the people i've met. They care so much about everyone around them and for the animals. I've talked about it in my last post, but they have so much passion. I respect and admire that a ton and hope I develop that within myself. Also I'm happy that this experience is so unique and everyday is different. I feel more well rounded now. And to be working with beautiful animals who have had such rough lives has really given me a different perspective on the world around us. Learning about the exotic animal trade and other things like that has really taught me it's everywhere. I think it's crazy but i'm glad i've learned all this.

Everyone Around Me
January 27, 2016
If theres one thing i've noticed about the people i've been working with. it's how much passion they have for what they do. They would do anything to make sure the animals are well and not only the animals at LTB but animals around the world at other sanctuaries and such. I always hear people telling younger kids to get a job in something their passionate about. These people love working at LTB and they don't care how much it's paying them or anything like that. I hope that when I get a job later on i'm doing something I love and care for or making a difference.

IPOL
January 26, 2017
For my IPOL i made a short and simple powerpoint with everything in it I'll need to go over. When I'm presenting I also plane to use note cards so I make sure I hit everything and a hard copy of my project to show everyone. I feel pretty prepared for any questions because I feel really comfortable talking about LTB and what it's about. Over the course of this internship I have learned to appreciate other peoples help. It makes everything get done so much faster and its nice to have someone else around. Also I have a great appreciation for these animals, what they've been through, and the chance to get to work with them. I feel I've been helping LTB out by doing whatever they need. Depending on the day tasks can change and I've learned to do a lot of tasks so I can help out more.

Communication
January 25, 2017
I have learned a lot about self advocacy at my internship. Your boss or co workers in a job don't want to tell you what you need to do all the time. I have learned a lot about knowing what I have to do without someone having to tell me every time. I think is super helpful in a real job. Communication is very important as well. You have to communicate with everyone around you or else something may not go as planned. At LTB people work off of each other a lot and someone will do a specific task so that the next person can do their specific task, and without communicating nothing would ever get done. In whatever job I decide to get after school, all of these things will be important. This internship is really teaching me you have to be self motivated but able to work with others too.

Project
January 24, 2017
My original idea of a project was to create and print calendars LTB could sell in their gift shop but to earn the money to print, I needed to raise $500. So I made a gofundme page but didn't make enough money and now I would not be able to get the prints in time. After some more brainstorming with my mentor I decided to re-make the fire evacuation plan for the animals. If something we to happen at LTB they would have to quickly evacuate animals and so I decided I would try and make that a little bit easier in case of an emergency. Each cage and station or any building on the property needed to be assigned a number. Some already had numbers but I had to update and accommodate for the new enclosures that had not been accounted for. Once I did that I did a lot of computer work to make the signs as nice and easy to read as possible while still looking good since they would be placed right in the open. I put pictures of the different animals and their corresponding numbers as well as the LTB logo with the numbers that didn't necessarily go with a certain animal. Working on the computer to make them was kind of a challenge because they all needed to be as similar as possible. I just finished making all those and laminated them so they would last longer. Now I have to go around all the property and hang as many as possible. Some of them the keepers will have to hang because they are in areas I'm not allowed to be in. I feel a lot better now that I can use many different computer programs for whatever I may need to make things look good. Also I feel great that I could be able to help the people who work there and the animals.

School Vs. Internship
January 20, 2017
Internship is definetly more of a "play it by ear" environment than school is. At school l have a set schedule even though I learn new things in my classes each day, I still have specfic classes at a certain time. At LTB its whatever needs to be done that day and it can change at any time. And you need to be ready for anything. This will help me later one especially when things don't go as planned and I have to figure out another way to do something and be prepared for whatever may happen. This can also help me in school bring in new ideas with new people and learn to work in any situation. This internship is a great experience for my future and just me now in general. It is such a unique internship and I am learning so much about what I am passionate about and many skills I can use in the future. Even if I were not to pursue some type of carrer with animals, this has shown me alot and I will always be grateful I got the chance to do this when lots of people don't realize it's something they can do until later on.

Improvement
January 19, 2017
Over the course of my internship I have been learning many new skills all around. Almost all of them will help me more once I get back to school and when I graduate and move on to college and a career. Skills like, Excel and other computer applications that are very helpful with organizing and keeping lots of data in one place. Some other skills I have learned is working with all different types of people! High tech has really helped me, throughout my time being there, learn to work in groups. But I am learning a lot of customer service skills, and it's helping me work with people who aren't necessarily doing the same job as me. I hope over the rest of my time here I learn many new skills that will help me later on.

Challenges
January 18, 2017
So far the biggest challenge at my internship is having to keep up. Everything is always moving and changing at LTB and we're working with animals so everything must be done just right. Also it's challenging not knowing what the day has in store for me. I could be sitting inside all day taking phone calls and reservations or maybe something happened to one of the animals. It's something different everyday which is definitely a change in environment for me. It's the opposite of school where I go and have my schedule. So far there hasn't been a specific and eventful problem that has arose for my mentor and I, but just little, everyday mistakes, she says she's really happy to have us there because we always bring in new ideas that can make things a little more simple.

Fellow Interns
January 17, 2017
Kenneth Arnold: Kenneth seems to be loving his internship and from knowing him for a few years I can say I definitely see him being very passionate about becoming a teacher. We've both been working ALOT with people, different age groups of course, but people none the less. I wonder if he would ever be interested in trying to work with a different age group than the one he's working with now.
Benny Jimenez: Benny seems like he's having a really unique and amazing experience. I think it is a really big opportunity he has and is really helping him figure out where he'd like to take things in college. But I'd like to know which branch of this career he'd like to go into most, even if it would take a lot of time.
Nathan Brown: Nathan's internship seems really fascinating! He's is also really narrowing down a lot of options that he might take his career. I think medicine and or psychology are super cool and he's very intellectual so he'd probably be very good at either one. Also taking an EMT class is a great opportunity. I'm super excited to see what's next for him over this month

The Future
January 14, 2017
This internship is really helping me figure out what I want to do when I'm older. Many visitors that have come to LTB have asked me if I want to do something like this and that's why I'm interning there. I have always loved animals but I never really knew what I would do with them as a job. But LTB has really opened my eyes and working with exotic animals is so cool. Getting to go there everyday with lions and tigers is really awesome to think about. I've realized working with animals is something I'd love to do. I still don't know exactly what I would want to do but it has definitely become more of an option for me since the beginning of this month.

Social Life
January 13, 2017
Everybone is very social at LTB. It is mostly volunteer run so people are always doing things together and helping each other out. People also have specific tasks they do by themselves but for the most part, everyone is always working on something that ties in to what someone else is doing. Plus the good part is that you can focus on what you like doing there, you may like being in the office so you can help everyone out in there or you may love giving the tours so you can help the tour guides. But it works out perfectly because that's how everything gets done. Theres so much work to do there they couldn't possibly do it all with out help from someone else.

Project Idea
January 12, 2017
So as of now, my internship project will be to create calendars that LTB can sell in their gift shop to earn more donations since they are fully donation based. I will be using my creative skills to make sure they look nice and people want to buy them. Also computer skills because I will be designing them on a computer and getting them printed. I'm going to start a Go Fund Me page to earn the money to get the prints. This will help LTB earn more money for the animals. Also anyone who loves the animals and wants to see a picture of them every month.

Benefits
January 11, 2017
Lions Tigers and Bears benefits so many people and animals. Anyone can actually benefit from learning about or visiting LTB. LTB educates people on the importance of the exoctic animals trade industry. All the animals there have been rescued and so every morning we prepare their food and go spread it out to them so then on tours they can feed them. As we go through the tour you learn about the stories of all these animals. Some are sad but it is important everyone realizes what it's like for them. Also LTB is a HUGE benefit to the animals in general. Here they have a safe place where they get the right medical care, food and attention. LTB's benefit is the experiennce you get when learning about it.

My Co-Worker:
January 10, 2017
This is Angie. She works here at Lions Tigers and Bears. She graduated from UCSD with a 2 year business degree and became and accountant for a constuction company before working here. She says her lifes career path is her farm. She owns a farm and grows and sells mushrooms. But LTB is her other job. She makes sure everything comes together. Shes in charge of keeping track of the deposits, write checks and auditing and makes sure that everything thats coming in and everything going out is in order. She's a huge part of LTB and hopes to be there a long time. |
Suprises:
January 6, 2017
The thing that has suprised me most over this first week at my internship, is probably how much time and effort goes in to taking care of all these animals. I knew that taking care of any animal is a big responsibility, but I am used to taking care of my dog. Taking care of a exoctic animal is a lot harder than that. These animals need constant cleaning, food, and care, and all of us have to accomidate for all of that. Which means cleaning a ton of dishes, cleaning cages and making sure the animals are fed properly. But keeping up with all this makes it really messy on our end too, so not only do we have to keep their space clean but ours aswell. The picture I've posted is just a small amount of dishes we've done in just one morning of one day. Another thing that suprises me is the stories of all these animals and where theyve come from. You often don't think about the animals back story when you go to the zoo or somewhere like that, but these animals have been in some crazy and terrible situations. Its amazing theyve made it so far and even though I knew it before it will probably always suprise that people can treat animals like that. |
The Mission:
January 5, 2017
At Lions Tigers and Bears, their mission is to provide a safe haven to abused and abandoned exoctic animals while still educating the public on the exoctic animal trade. They want to get information out about the trade market to put it to an end. Lots of exoctic animals, such as tigers and lions, are held in captivity legally and illegally. In some states in the U.S, owning an exoctic animal is legal but many people don't realize how much work and attention they need, then once they grow bigger people no longer want them and either lock them in small cages or abandon them. Other times, people purposly buy exoctic animals to get money like, breeding and selling, selling fur and urine ect. That's where Lions Tigers and Bears steps in and rescues animals who have been wrongly treated or neglected and gives them a place they can call home where they have proper food fed to them, a big enough cage and medical work done if needed. They really care for the animals here and I think their mission is a very powerful one.

My Mentor:
January 4, 2017
My Mentors name is Alyssa Cantwell. She graduated from USD with a biology degree. She had a job at the San Diego Zoo for awhile and then started volunteering at Lions Tigers and Bears. After being involved so much she is now the manager there and takes on many other rolls. You can tell Alyssa has a real passion for what she does. She loves and cares about all the animals and people there. She is super friendly all the time and very helpful. I can't wait to get to know her better over the month! |
Hopes, Dreams and Fears:
January 3, 2017
My hopes and dreams for this month is that I will be able to gain a lot more experience with all types of animals. I am definetly considering going into a job that has to do with animals and the more experience I can get, especially with exoctic and wild animals, the better. This will really help me determine what my plan for the future is. My fear is mostly that I will not get to enjoy the animal factor of it all. Lions Tigers and Bears is not a place to hang out with the exoctic animals because they are rescues and the goal is to take care of them not use them as an attraction. I just hope I am able to get to see the animals enough rather than spending the whole month just cleaning dishes they eat out of. Even though I realize that is a big part of it, I hope to gain the experience of seeing their personalities and watching them behave.

Site Visit:
December 7, 2016
Today was the first day going up to Lions Tigers and Bears. When I first got there I felt a little bit unsure if this was going to be good for me for an entire month. We first went on a tour and met all the animals. They were amazingly beautiful. Super happy too. They had more animals than I realized, they had bears, tigers, lions, bobcats, mountain lions, white tigers and some farm animals. They talked a lot about the stories of these animals and how they ended up with them. Some were super sad but I'm really happy I can be apart of something to help them. They also talked about the exotic animal trade industry which I already knew a lot about but I think its super interesting to hear about (as well as extremely sad).
After that we met up with our mentor for January, Alyssa Cantwell. She was super nice and talked a lot about what we'd be doing all January. We're going to be doing a lot of cleaning, helping with tours, food prep and hoofstock care. Hoofstock care is basically taking care of the mini donkey and mini horse they have on the property. Cleaning their pens, giving them food and taking them on walks. I'm super excited for january now and can't wait to be working with all the animals there.
